The Ambitious Card by John Gaspard (An Eli Marks Mystery)

The life of a magician isn’t all kiddie shows and card tricks. Sometimes it’s murder.

Mystery and magic, the fixings for a great book right?  How about mystery, magic and MURDER?  Even better!  Eli Marks, the main character is what he would call himself as a ‘debunker’ or skeptic, as well as a magician.  Eli and his uncle Harry also run a magic shop.  When Eli gets the chance to be a ‘debunker’ and magician on a live TV show, he uses his skills to debunk a celebrity psychic in front of everyone.   He expected a few insults but not that Grey, the psychic himself, would be murdered within hours, or that this would be the start of a number of murders of psychics.

One other  problem for Eli is that his ex wife’s current husband is Homicide Officer Fred Hutton, who, when he realizes that Eli had been on the scene, arrests him, over and over again, more or less every time another psychic is murdered.   Another complication is that the King of  Diamonds appears at every murder scene, which seems to implicate Eli further – perhaps a little too obviously.  It couldn’t be that Eli was being set-up, could it?  Or was Eli’s magical card trick he had preformed for the show, becoming the main clue to each of the murders?

This story is very well written and fun to read.  It really kept my attention and I honestly did not expect who the murder suspect ended up being!  I would definitely read another Eli Marks Mystery!  Keep an eye out, author John Gaspard is going to be a Featured Author of the Month for February and while you wait, get your hands on this book!
